The Saguaro and Its Little Friend the Prickly Pear

Whenever Bugs Bunny is hanging out in the desert, the landscape is dotted with big tall cactus that look kind of like this:

The funny thing is, this type of cactus doesn’t grow in every part of the desert of the Southwestern United States. It grows in some parts of Arizona and down into Mexico, but there are vast bits of desert with not one single Saguaro. Much more common is the Prickly Pear. But the poor Prickly Pear just isn’t as striking as the Saguaro, all the Prickly Pear has is a slight familial resemblance to Mickey. So the Saguaro gets all the attention.

The Saguaro even has kind of a sense of humor about itself:

So while the Prickly Pear minds its own business and hugs the desert floor, the Saguaro stand majestically above it all. There’s even a National Park named after it, in Tucson, Arizona.

With all due respect to the Prickly Pear though, the Saguaro is pretty amazing. Even when decaying:

And for the icing on the cake, the Saguaro puts on quite a show at sunset:
